EPA-R7WWPD-05-006 Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) Wetland Program Development Grants MARC proposes to develop a Regional Green Infrastructure Plan for the Kansas City metro area to support more sustainable urban development. Products include: 1) a policy framework supportive of wetland conservation and restoration, 2) maps of wetland conservation/restoration priorities, 3) county-based green infrastructure plans, 4) community support for project goals, and 5) a regional organizational framework to support implementation strategies. $250,000
EPA-R7WWPD-05-006 Kansas State Conservation Commission Wetland Program Development Grants The project will: 1) develop a framework for a comprehensive Kansas wetland and aquatic resources conservation plan; 2) develop a tracking system for wetland gains and losses; 3) complete demonstration projects for wetland and stream restoration; and 4) continue implementing the Kansas Wetlands and Riparian Areas Protection and Restoration Implementation Plan. $217,212
EPA-R7WWPD-05-006 The Curators of the University of Missouri Wetland Program Development Grants The project goal is to create a guidance document to assist Missouri Department of Transportation in selecting right-of-way locations to minimize impacts to wetlands, and to increase the effectiveness of road construction compensatory wetlands. These goals will be accomplished through: 1) identifying landscape factors correlated with wetland performance as measured by the successful metamorphosis and recruitment of amphibians into a breeding population; 2) translating knowledge of proposed right-of-way location spatial factors into GIS analysis; 3) translating these factors into compensatory wetlands design criteria; 4) creating & monitoring the health of new compensatory wetlands based on the criteria; and 5) incorporation into guidance. $250,000
EPA-R7WWPD-05-005 Limestone Bluffs Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area, Inc. Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant This project will 1) complete a comprehensive assessment of the watershed above Lake Delhi (which is part of the Maquoketa River watershed in Eastern Iowa) to identify priority areas for future project development; 2) complete a detailed "field by field" assessment in priority sub-watersheds and identify and demonstrate strategies to reduce sediment, nutrient and bacterial impairments; 3) implement a model designed to measure the impacts of Best Management Practices; 4) assess the impacts of storm and waste water from cluster developments and communities and identify potential solutions and 5) establish sub-watershed stakeholder groups to set priorities for future implementation. $100,000
EPA-R7WWPD-05-005 Missouri Department of Conservation Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant This project will 1) identify streambank stabilization techniques that might provide cost-effective control for moderate-sized streams in Missouri; 2) select 3 techniques for evaluation; 3) install each technique in 5 different sites and evaluate their effectiveness over multiple high flow events, and 4) determine suitability of these techniques for use by landowners and transfer knowledge. $100,000
EPA-R7WWPD-05-005 Dr. Marian Maas Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant The goals of this project are to: 1) improve knowledge of Papillion Creek streams water quality; 2) identify BMPs for targeted segments with diminished water quality, and 3) convey this knowledge for improved BMP implementation and water quality awareness in a strong information marketing effort. Although portions of the watershed are listed on the Clean Water Act Section 303(d) Impaired Waters list for fecal coliform, PCBs, and Dieldrin; the majority of the streams in the system have not been assessed to date by NDEQ. $131,200
EPA-R7WWPD-05-005 Prairie Winds Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area, Inc. Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant The project’s goal is to develop a comprehensive watershed management plan for the Upper Winnebago River in order to determine the likely causes for low biological diversity impairments. The project will recommend habitat improvements within stream and to stream banks where these are limiting factors in aquatic life, determine nutrient loading and implement a detailed water monitoring program, identify appropriate BMPs, and assess land use and critical areas of non-point source pollution loading. $98,738
EPA-R7WWPD-05-005 Des Moines Water Works Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant This project will 1) optimize the river water diversion and off-river storage drinking water pretreatment system (the system increases flow of low-nitrate water to the infiltration gallery and increases pond overflow for use as low-nitrate dilution water); 2) eliminate the need for the Ion Exchange Removal facility; 3) reduce nitrate, chloride, and total dissolved solids loads of the Raccoon River; and 4) define and assess the variables necessary for optimum biological denitrification for transferability to other water treatment facilities and agricultural operations. $85,286

Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant The applicant will conduct hands-on community based efforts to physically clean up large quantities of solid waste from the Clean Water Act Section 303(d) listed stretch of the Missouri River from Kansas City, KS to Omaha, NE. $60,000
EPA-R7WWPD-05-005 Missouri River Communities Network Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant The objectives of this project are to teach 40 high school and middle school teachers about stormwater run-off, water quality monitoring, and how to integrate clean water curriculum meeting state education standards. The project will train teachers with student mentors in water quality testing, assist them to integrate water quality testing and watershed mapping in classroom curriculum, initiate the formation of 80 Stream teams and stream adoptions, and organize 80 Litter Pick Ups at adopted streams. $95,900
EPA-R7WWPD-05-005 Sedgwick County, Kansas Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant The project goal is to determine whether pollutants carried by stormwater runoff into sand pits affect the quality of groundwater underlying and surrounding these pits. To achieve this goal, groundwater wells will be monitored quarterly, results will be analyzed, and BMPs will be implemented to address identified pollutant source. $98,240
EPA-R7WWPD-05-005 Curators of the University of Missouri Water Quality Cooperative Agreement Grant The project goal is to create biological criteria for fish communities of wadeable streams of Missouri. The steps taken to create the criteria include: 1) improving quantitative criteria for defining reference stream reaches, 2) calibrating and verifying biological metrics and a multi-metric index, and 3) developing criteria which establish the status of the community. $36,691

Project will also promote source reduction through outreach, presentations, workshops, and facilitated environmental management system (EMS) training and develop and nurture partnerships with service providers and encourage them to include multi-media pollution prevention in their activities. $137,678
EPA-R7RGAD-05-001 El Centro, Inc. Environmental Justice Youth Advocates for a Healthy Community. This project will develop a middle school/high school youth campaign and advocacy effort designed to increase awareness about childhood lead poisoning and increase prevention. The anticipated results of the project are a decrease in the number of children with elevated blood levels, an increase in the number of homes evaluated for lead and an increase in the number of children tested for lead. $25,000
EPA-R7RGAD-05-001 Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council Environmental Justice The Ivanhoe Reduction in Hazardous Waste/Toxic Substances Project. This project will provide outdoor trash containers,, dumpsters, organize tire pickups and organized block clean ups through partnerships to reduce the amount of hazardous waste/toxic substances. Expected results will be: a reduction in the amount of improperly disposed trash; an increase number of residents who use dumpsters or clean ups; an increase in the number of residents who recycle; collected data to show benefits of trash containers in high traffic areas. $25,000
EPA-R7RGAD-05-001 Howardville Community Betterment Environmental Justice The project will develop and implement a safe drinking water campaign in the community by addressing the causes and effects of respiratory (asthma) related illnesses through home surveys and demonstrations to aid in prevention and control of air pollution. Expected results would be a reduction in the number of asthma cases and an increased number of families knowledgeable about air and water quality. $25,000
EPA-R7RGAD-05-001 Sisters Together, Inc. Omaha Chapter Environmental Justice Take it to the Street Project. In collaboration with the Urban League of Nebraska and other grass root communities, this will address Clean Air Act and Toxic Substance Act education areas due to the high incidence of lead poisoning and asthma in the eastern portion of Omaha. Project results will be to: improve residents' health pertaining to lead poisoning and asthma; determine present level of residents' knowledge of lead and asthma; and present finding to community decision makers for more reduction in lead poisoning and asthma. $25,000
EPA-R7RGAD-05-001 Mid-America Regional Council Community Services Corporation Environmental Justice Urban Air Pollution Inequities.
This project will characterize the spatial concentrations of ground level ozone and evaluate the degree of differential exposure among urban and suburban communities. The project will continue work with community members to reduce ozone precursors, promote air quality awareness, and meet federal attainment standards, as well as extend partnerships to included more researchers in Kansas City and include respiratory illness, pollen, and particulate matter.
