Region 5 Solid Waste Program

The Region 5 Solid Waste program promotes waste prevention, reuse and recycling of non-hazardous solid waste. We also work closely with our partners, including State agencies, Indian Tribes, local governments, universities and citizen groups, to solve municipal solid waste generation and management problems.
These actions support EPA's Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC), a national effort to:

Regional Priorities

Region 5 staff provide technical assistance on all non-hazardous waste streams and grant funding for solid waste management projects to state and local governments, non-profit organizations, and tribes. Additional funding may be available through the EPA Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response Innovations Initiative.

Region 5 Waste Minimization Program
Technical assistance program for hazardous waste generators focusing on the most persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals (PBTs). Resources include training, fact sheets, and links to state waste exchanges.
National Municipal Solid Waste Program
Provides state & national MSW data, tips on practicing the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle), and disposal regulations.
National Office of Solid Waste Homepage
Highlights the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Corrective Action hazardous waste cleanup program. Provides publications and resources on municipal solid waste, hazardous, industrial and special waste topics such as Universal wastes.
