Region 5 Solid Waste Program
Region 5 Waste Areas
The Region 5 Solid Waste program promotes waste prevention, reuse and recycling of non-hazardous solid waste. We also work closely with our partners, including State agencies, Indian Tribes, local governments, universities and citizen groups, to solve municipal solid waste generation and management problems.
These actions support EPA's Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC), a national effort to:
- increase the national municipal solid waste recycling rate
- increase the beneficial use of industrial byproducts
- reduce or eliminate priority and toxic chemicals, and
- “green” electronics

Regional Priorities
Region 5 staff provide technical assistance on all non-hazardous waste streams and grant funding for solid waste management projects to state and local governments, non-profit organizations, and tribes. Additional funding may be available through the EPA Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response Innovations Initiative.
Due to interest from states, industry, and citizens, Region 5 staff focuses their efforts in the following areas:
