Kyrene Elementary School District's 2005 Strategy

Strategic Approach

The Kyrene School District is using an Integrated Pest Management program in all of its buildings and grounds. it is the intention of the district to continue to promote this program, which will increase awareness of alternative methods as well as reduce pesticide risks. Through educational programs, the district will also help educate students, staff, community members, and other school districts on the benefit of IPM.

Progress on 2004 Activity 1

The Kyrene School District will continue to use the Integrated Pest Management program at all of its sites. Greater attention will be given to providing education of students, staff and community members regarding the IPM approach to pesticide reduction.

The Kyrene School District has published bi-monthly Pest Press and distributed them to each site. We have posted the Pest Press on our department web page so we can refer individuals to it for information. We have provided training to district health assistants to help them better understand the IPM program and what role they can play in supporting the IPM program.

Progress on 2004 Activity 2

We will make our services available to the IPM in Arizona Schools Coalition, as well as other entities interested in implementing the Monroe Integrated Pest Management program.

The Kyrene School District has worked along side the IPM in Arizona Schools Coalition in hosting workshops. We have interacted with other Arizona school districts and discussed how our IPM program was implemented and what strategies of implementation have been successful. We have not focussed any time on other entities.

Activities for the Coming Year

Activity 1

The Kyrene School District will continue to use the Integrated Pest Management program at all of its sites. We will be increasing the number of monitoring traps and pest sighting logs throughout the district and educate our staff on how to use them to help monitor our pest populations.

How does this activity reduce pesticide risk?

Through monitoring of our pest populations, we can determine what type of pests that are present and identify an alternative method of pest control that is least toxic.

How will you measure the risk reduction gained from this activity?

The risk reduction will be measured by comparing data from month to month to see if our numbers of pests have gone up or down and whether or not our methods of pest control have been successful.
