National Potato Council

(PESP Partner since December 1994)

The National Potato Council (NPC) represents 10,500 commercial potato growers in 50 states. Members produce both seed potatoes and potatoes for consumption in a variety of forms. Annual production exceeds 450,000,000 hundred weight with a farm value approaching $2.5 billion. Total value is substantially increased through processing. Potatoes are the most popular of all vegetables grown with annual U.S. per capita consumption of 138 pounds.

In 1988, NPC realized the importance of focusing on environmental issues and created the Environmental Affairs Committee. Through this committee, NPC has been engaged in a number of areas related to pesticides. NPC is one of the Charter Partners in PESP and has an established policy of working closely with EPA and FDA on food safety as related to potatoes. NPC’s PESP strategy emphasizes IPM, grower education, and reducing risks through new application technology. NPC has received two grants to support its PESP work. The second is allowing NPC to define what IPM is for the nation’s potato growers and to determine what percentage of the growers are at various stages in the adoption of IPM practices
