Science Information

The Science Information headings listed below provide links to a range of scientific information and resources - analytical and observational data, assistance centers and hotlines, publications, projects, and more.

For purposes of this site, we have defined science as the process by which we explain the world around us - it represents our Ways of Knowing. One approach people use to explain the world is tribal traditional knowledge, which encompasses a range of ways that people living indigenous lifestyles perceive, think, act, and "come to know" their world and is primarily based on their experience with the environment and usually passed on orally. Another approach tends to focus on information that is collected through a path of linear, standardized steps, described as analytically based science (commonly referred to as "Western" science). However, recently scientists of all disciplines have begun to recognize the added benefit of having more integrated scientific approaches, especially when trying to solve environmental problems.

EPA has recognized that there is value in each of these different approaches to sciences and has collected a variety of resources. These resources can be accessed using the links below.
