Respected Educator, Businessman, Community Leader Tapped
for Secretarys Committee to Address Skills Gap
WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has appointed
Professor Heo-Peh Lee to serve on the Secretarys Committee on the Skills
Gap in the Workforce, part of the Presidents Council on the
21st Century Workforce. Mr. Lee will join a distinguished group of
business leaders and educators who provide counsel to the President and the
Secretary of Labor on workforce issues.
I am pleased that Professor Lee will contribute his leadership and
experience as an educator to addressing the demand for skilled workers in
America, said Chao. It is critical that we better understand
Americas changing workplace, so we can better serve and protect the
workforce of the 21st century.
Professor Heo-Peh Lee is president of Shie-Jie Enterprises, a real
estate development, construction, and business consulting company in
Whitestone, N.Y. He has been a visiting professor at National Chengchi
University in Taiwan, and was named one of 50 outstanding Chinese Americans in
business in 2001. Lee also served as president of the board of trustees of the
Queens public library system in New York City and as a member of the audit
advisory committee of the New York City board of education. He is also a
recipient of the 2002 Ellis Island Medal of Honor for Distinguished
Immigrants.
Professor Heo-Peh Lee will join 13 other Asian Pacific Americans
appointed by Secretary Chao to various positions at the U.S. Department of
Labor. Under Secretary Chaos leadership, the U.S. Department of Labor has
the largest number of Asian Pacific American appointees, including three
Presidential appointments with Senate confirmation and five who serve as
advisors to the Secretary through the Office of the 21st Century
Workforce.
Secretary Chao is the first Asian American woman to serve in the
Cabinet. President George W. Bush has appointed more than 70 APA appointees, a
historic number, throughout his Administration, including two Cabinet
secretaries.
The Secretary of Labors Committee on the Skills Gap in the
Workforce is charged with assessing the effects of technological changes,
demographic trends, globalization and changes in work processes, and will
examine the need for new and enhanced skills for workers.
