Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao on the Work Stoppage at the West Coast Ports

WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today issued the following statement about the West Coast port work stoppage and urged the two parties to resolve their differences.

“The continued closure of the ports on the West Coast is having effects beyond the immediate parties. Both management and the union should recognize that workers, farmers and consumers are paying a price for this continued impasse.

“The Administration calls on both parties to work in good faith with the Federal Mediator to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.

“In the meantime, many workers around the country, both union and non-union, depend upon the West Coast ports for their jobs. Our economy depends on trade, and our consumers need the products being brought in. The Administration therefore urges both sides to return to normal operations while negotiations are underway.”
