Labor Grant Will Aid
Dislocated Iowa Workers
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces Over
$427,000 National Emergency Grant To Supplement Re-employment Programs
WASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced
a National Emergency Grant of more than $427,000 that will aid 120 workers laid
off from International Paper in Clinton, Iowa. The new grant supplements a
previous grant of $231,000 awarded in April for workers laid off from the
company. National Emergency Grants are part of the secretarys
discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state or local workforce
investment board submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
The President and I have been working hard to ensure Iowa has the
resources to get her displaced workers the job and skills training they need to
find re-employment, Chao said. We look forward to seeing these
workers in Clinton get back to work.
The project will be operated by Eastern Iowa Community College, and will
supplement existing re-employment programs including: job search assistance,
job development, job placement, basic skills training and counseling.
Helping American workers who have lost their jobs remains a top
priority for this Administration, said Chao. The President and I
believe temporary assistance for displaced workers will help the economy grow
quickly and create more desirable and secure jobs.
