Welcome to the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI). This office has the lead responsibility for expanding the Nation's fundamental knowledge and understanding of education through research and development. We also support efforts to apply and test findings from research in classrooms, schools, college campuses, and other educational settings. Through our contractors and grantees, we provide research results to the public, policymakers, professional educators, and a variety of organizations to enhance the understanding of education and contribute to improvement efforts. Our National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) collects and analyzes data on education in the United States and other nations.
OERI's work is in concert with a need that educators and policymakers have clearly expressed--a need for guidance on matters related to teaching and learning. Providing practitioners with specific, research-based advice is an essential component of OERI's national effort to help all children meet new and challenging standards. It is through research, data collection and analysis, and improvement activities that we identify and disseminate information regarding effective practices that greatly enhance learning opportunities for children.
