The university includes six colleges:  School of Communication, School of International Service, School of Public Affairs, Kogod School of Business, College of Arts and Sciences and the Washington College of Law.

The School of Communication is the only professional school in Washington that brings journalism, film and public relations together, with an international perspective and a focus on digital, interactive, and social media. It offers MFA, MA and BA degrees in Film and Media Arts, International Media, Journalism and Public Communication

The School of International Service is the largest school of international relations in the United States. Each student is committed to an international career and public service, has international experience and possesses a spirit of inquiry and involvement.

The School of Public Affairs is a nationally top-ranked school of its kind (U.S. News & World Report).  Distinguished faculty and leading programs prepare leaders for careers in today’s public service-the fastest growing and most dynamic section of the economy, where government, nonprofit and private enterprise converge.

The Kogod School of Business ranks 28 out of 51 schools in BusinessWeek's fourth annual "The Best Undergraduate B-Schools" ranking. Kogod prepares students to become active global citizens who are highly engaged and well-prepared as graduates to lead private, public and nonprofit organizations.

The College of Arts and Sciences at American University offers a challenging liberal arts education within a vibrant and diverse community.  The faculty includes nationally and internationally noted artists, scholars, and teachers committed to innovative approaches to instruction and excellence in research and creative endeavors.

The Washington College of Law (WCL) is a top US law school that provides an excellent legal education in all areas of the law.  WCL has renowned programs in experiential learning (clinics and externships), international law, law and government, intellectual property, business and gender.
