·            Malaysian imports of water and wastewater equipment in 2005 were around U.S. $878 million, an increase of 7% compared to 2004.  In 2005, the U.S. had the second largest market share of 20% and its primary foreign competitor is Japan with a market share of 31%.  A significant major emerging competitor is China that has a 19% market share.  Promising subsectors include:

·           Water supply:  Demand for water is expected to double from 10.7 to 20 million liters per day by year 2010.  One of the focal points is to upgrade and rehabilitate the existing water supply system to improve efficiency.

·            Industrial wastewater treatment:  The major industrial wastewater polluters are food and beverage processors, electric & electronics industries, chemical-based industry, textiles, and rubber & palm oil industries.

·            Municipal sewerage treatment:  Over U.S. $395 million has been allocated for improvement of the sewage systems in the country.  Indah Water Konsortium (a wholly-owned company of the Ministry of Finance Inc.) is responsible for providing technical expertise and project management to projects that cover refurbishment of existing public sewerage treatment plants, public sewerage pipes network, pumping stations, and central sludge facilities throughout the country.

Best Prospects/Services

·            Compact biological treatment systems and aeration equipment systems.

·            Advanced wastewater treatment chemicals such as polyelectrolyte flocculent and aluminum chloride.

·           Ultra pure water technologies.

Opportunities

·            Improvements in existing water supply systems have been given lower priority.  As a result, the efficiency of many treatment plants has declined, leading to a reduction in output or difficulties in treating water to required standards.  There is a need for rehabilitation and refurbishment work to restore operational efficiencies at these plants.  Additionally, prospects exist to introduce new technologies to increase output without sacrificing the quality of treated water.

·           U.S. companies with water and wastewater treatment technology will find significant business opportunities in high-growth manufacturing industries such as the electrical and electronics; chemicals, petrochemicals and plastics; and food and beverages.

·            Advanced waste recovery systems for solvents, waste oil, acid, and metals are in demand in the printed circuit board, iron and steel, electronics, and semi-conductor industries.  Also in high demand are ultra pure water technologies, particularly in the semiconductor and electronics industries.  Other opportunities are for high-tech water monitoring and analytical equipment, and oil-water separators.
