NMFS Announces Crab Rationalization Program Workshopat Pacific Marine Expo November 11, 2004

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Alaska Region, will present a Crab Rationalization Program workshop to introduce and explain proposed regulations (see 69 FR 63200, October 29, 2004) to implement Amendments 18 and 19 to the Fishery Management Plan for Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands (BSAI) King and Tanner Crabs, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide information on the proposed regulations in order to assist interested members of the public to provide comment. The regulations will implement a recommendation by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council to "rationalize" the BSAI crab fisheries. The rationalization program, which was congressionally approved in January of this year, is designed to provide for a safer and more stable crab fishery. Managers expect to implement the program during 2005.
