Shale Butte WSA

General Location: About 26 miles east of Shoshone, Idaho in Lincoln County.

Natural Features: The area is an older lava flow that rises up to 300 feet above the surrounding plain. The lava has been largely covered by wind-blown soil deposits but exposed lava outcrops are common.

Total Acres: 15,968

Acres Supported by BLM for Wilderness Designation: -0-

Rationale for BLM's Recommendation: The natural values of the WSA are marginal. The No Wilderness recommendation would allow greater flexibility in restoring wildlife habitat and controlling wildfire.
