ANSS - Advanced National Seismic System
Northeast Region
Mission
Regional seismic monitoring in the Northeast relies primarily on the integrated seismic monitoring efforts of Weston Observatory of Boston College, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) at Columbia University and the USGS. Boston College runs a 14-station broadband network in the New England region, LDEO operates an adjacent network of 40 short-period, broadband and strong motion stations primarily focusing on earthquake activity in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and surrounding states, and the USGS operates and maintains complementary stations of the ANSS backbone seismic network. Coordinated data exchange between the principal monitoring facilities ensures uniform earthquake reporting and response and the compilation of high-quality earthquake data and catalog products, which are critical for earthquake hazards assessment and mitigation.
