Washington, DC -- The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that President Bush has ordered emergency aid to support immediate response efforts in Virginia for the terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh said the President's emergency declaration triggers the release of all federal resources necessary to meet urgent human needs and protect public health and safety. The assistance can range from the use of federal personnel and equipment to provisions for medical and other essential life-sustaining supplies.
Allbaugh said four FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces - one each from Maryland and Tennessee and two from Virginia, and three Disaster Medical Assistance Teams from Georgia, Maryland and North Carolina already have been deployed to assist emergency operations.
Allbaugh, directed by the President to coordinate the immediate federal response, said funding provided by the declaration covers emergency activities undertaken by the state and local governments in Arlington County. He indicated that other forms of federal assistance may be made available as soon as damage can be fully assessed in the stricken area.
Thomas Davies of FEMA was named by Allbaugh to serve as the federal coordinating officer for the on-going emergency response activities.
