Market News and Marketing Services

The purpose of the program is to provide timely price, market, and transportation information that increases transparency in the marketplace and to conduct monitoring activities that support fair trade. The program contributes to an effective food marketing system and improves market access for small to medium-sized farms.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • The Marketing Services program (MSP) gathers, analyzes, and makes available market data for use among participants throughout the agricultural marketing chain. Increased information in the marketplace provides all market participants with resources to inform their business transactions.
  • Market News, the largest single activity in MSP, provides, via the Internet and electronic information transfer, current information on certain agricultural commodities directly to the public and market participants. The program has recently made price data more accessible through improved electronic access but the collection of data is done manually.
  • MSP also develops and enforces organic standards and safeguards the appropriate seed labeling across State lines and in international markets. These varied efforts further the agencies contribution toward a level playing field for domestic agricultural producers.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Developing an automated system to collect and post Market News price data.
  • Clarifying long-term and annual measures to better demonstrate progress toward outcome-based performance goals.
  • Addressing strategic planning and management deficiencies through improved reporting and documentation of relevant program action.
