Superfund Remedial Action

EPA's Superfund Remedial Action program cleans up contamination from uncontrolled releases at Superfund hazardous waste sites that may threaten human health and the environment.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • The program's performance measures support cleanup and reuse of contaminated land by tracking progress in controlling all unacceptable human exposure contaminant pathways at sites listed on the National Priorities List.
  • It is not clear whether resources charged for program management, policy and administrative support functions directly address the program's purpose. A large portion of these and other Superfund resources (45%) are not charged to individual site cleanups.
  • The official data repository has significant data quality issues that may adversely affect accuracy and completeness of the data. For example, timely data entry was not monitored or enforced.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Implementing the recommendations of the Agency's 120-day study on management of the Superfund program.
  • Validating the reporting method for performance data and developing a new Superfund cleanup efficiency measure.
  • Modernizing the program's data repository to ensure accurate and complete information on program performance and financial management.
