Bureau of Indian Affairs - Forestry Management

The program provides technical assistance to Tribes for the improvement and management of Indian forests consistent with Tribal goals and objectives. Indian forests cover over 17 million acres in 26 States and have a commercial timber volume of approximately 42 billion board feet.

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • In FY 2003, 44% of the forested reservation acres had management plans to guide the forestry program. By the end of FY 2005, 85% of the acres were covered by management plans.
  • Tribes are taking a more active role in planning and managing their programs with 47% of the Tribes with forests providing their own services through contracts and compact agreements with the bureau.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Ensuring that by FY 2015 all forested reservations have a management plan.
  • Ensuring that the forest management plans are consistent with Tribal goals and objectives for economic and cultural purposes.
