Tennessee Valley Authority - NOx Emissions Reduction

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) NOx emissions reduction program is designed to remove nitrogen oxide compounds from emissions produced at TVA coal plants. The program's activities involve construction of selective catalytic converter (SCR) equipment at coal plants and monitoring emissions for regulatory compliance.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • TVA has been largely effective in achieving its annual and long-term goals to meet NOx reduction targets and comply with Clean Air Act mandates. TVA has met its annual NOx emissions targets every year except 2003 since the program began tracking results.
  • TVA has installed SCR equipment at 60 percent of its coal-fired power plants. Plans are underway to install two additional SCR units in 2007 and 5 additional units in 2009.
  • Analysis of several energy utility NOx emissions reduction programs in the Southeast shows that TVA's program is performing well when compared to others. However, little data exists on the efficiency (i.e. dollars spent per ton of NOx removed) of other utilities' NOx emissions reduction programs making direct comparisons of TVA's efficiency performance difficult.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Ensuring Clean Air Act compliance for all NOx related emissions associated with energy production at its coal plants.
  • Continuing installation of SCR equipment at coal plants to further reduce NOx emissions.
  • Monitoring NOx emissions reduction programs of other energy utilities in the greater Southeast area and striving to ensure TVA emissions program remains competitive with others.
