National Park Service - Visitor Services

This program provides national park visitors with the information they need to have a safe, enjoyable visit and a better appreciation of park resources. The National Park Service (NPS) directly provides these services through park rangers, with help from volunteers and cooperating groups.

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • NPS has a solid history of serving visitors. This is demonstrated with consistently high visitor satisfaction ratings, such as 96 percent of visitors reporting a good or very good experience last year.
  • The program has performance measures, but NPS does not consistently use this information, for example when evaluating managers or allocating funds.
  • NPS relies on volunteers and seasonal hires to provide cost-effective services. It could further improve efficiency through the increased use of such techniques as wayside exhibits and self-guided tours.
