  • As the chief federal agency responsible for collecting education statistics, the National Center for Education Statistics makes a unique contribution to knowledge about the conditions and outcomes of education in America.
  • Visitors to the NCES website report high levels of satisfaction with the overall quality and timeliness of NCES data files, publications, and services. In 2007, 89% of respondents were satisfied with the ease of understanding data files, 90% were satisfied with the ease of understanding publications, and 96% were satisfied with the courtesy of NCES staff providing services.
  • The program needs to continue to improve the timeliness of its products (including technical reports): in 2007, 84% of respondents were satisfied with the timeliness of data files and 86% were satisfied with the timeliness of publications, short of their targets of 90%. NCES is now tracking the time to release of survey data and met its 2007 target for time to release of initial release reports.

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Reporting data on the timeliness of the release of survey data and reports and on customer satisfaction with the timeliness of data files and publications.
  • Ensuring alignment between the Beginning Postsecondary Student (BPS) Longitudinal Study and the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009.
  • Reviewing two additional surveys to ensure that they are addressing current policy concerns, eliminating items that are no longer of relevance and adding new items that are.
