This report documents research conducted under a Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement between ARS and Can Tho University of Can Tho, Vietnam. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 3625-11120-003-00D, Biogeochemical processes influencing formation and stabilization of soil organic matter and soil structure. ARS staff is providing guidance to the Vietnamese collaborators for their field and greenhouse studies on soil nitrogen cycling under continuous rice cropping in the Mekong Delta. Initial results indicate that in contrast to the conventional practice of anaerobic decomposition of crop residues, aerobic decomposition promotes higher rice grain yields and better crop uptake of soil nitrogen derived from the soil organic matter. ARS lent an unused old gas chromatograph to the Vietnamese collaborators to support their biochemical analyses of the rice soils. Initial results promise to identify crop management options for rice farmers to meet or increase yield targets and make more efficient use of nitrogen.
