Research Project:
Sustainable Management of Agricultural Lands and Water Resources in the Upper Washita River Watershed
Location: Great Plains Agroclimate and Natural Resources Research Unit
2006 Annual Report
4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between ARS and the Great Plains Resource Conservation and Development. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 6218-11130-003-00D, Integration of Climate Variability and Forecasts into Risk-Based Management Tools for Agricultural Production and Resources Conservation. Land surveys have shown that voluntary adoption of conservation practices is limited among land managers. This project develops more responsive management approaches for agricultural lands and water resources that account for climate variability and risks. Also investigated are the quantitative impacts and value of conservation practices and programs at a watershed scale and dialog about water quality and water resources among diverse stakeholders. The work is being conducted as a case study within the Upper Washita River basin in Southwest Oklahoma. The Great Plains Resource Conservation and Development Association has supported a network of producers to encourage farmer adoption of no-tillage and other conservation practices and has communicated progress in numerous newsletters. They co-organized a no-tillage workshop for wheat-grazing systems that was attended by 152 people and another that focused on no-till cotton that attracted 277 participants. They have reviewed and provided feedback on plans for soil quality research and will help identify collaborator for on-farm research.
