Research Project:
Sustainable Management of Agricultural Lands and Water Resources in the Upper Washita River Watershed
Location: Great Plains Agroclimate and Natural Resources Research Unit
2005 Annual Report
4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between ARS and the Great Plains Resource Conservation and Development Association. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 6218-11130-003-00D, Integration of Climate Variability and Forecasts into Risk-Based Management Tools for Agriculture Production and Resource Conservation. Land surveys have shown that voluntary adoption of conservation practices is limited among land managers. This project develops more responsive management approaches for agricultural lands and water resources that account for climate variability and risks. Also investigated are the quantitative impacts and value of conservation practices and programs at a watershed scale and dialog about water quality and water resources among diverse stakeholders. The Great Plains Resource Conservation and Development Association has supported a network to encourage farmer adoption of no-tillage and other conservation practices, have communicated progress in numerous newsletters, and organized a no-tillage workshop in collaboration with the Fort Cobb Water Quality Project that was attended by over 100 farmers.
