INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Effective 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 2, the Lake County Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will be permanently closed, state and federal recovery officials announced today.
The Lake County center, located on the first floor of the Gary Sanitation District Payment Center 839 Broadway in Gary opened July 27, and has assisted 35 residents.
“Disaster Recovery Centers are opened temporarily after a Presidential disaster declaration to assist residents in their recovery,” said Justo “Tito” Hernandez, federal coordinating officer. “Disaster victims may still obtain information regarding the status of their applications by calling toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Hearing or speech impaired individuals can call TTY 1-800-462-7585.”
The deadline to apply for assistance for the storms, tornadoes and floods that occurred from May 25 through June 25 is August 2. Small Business Administration (SBA) applications must also be in by the August 2 deadline.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
