EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In the first week of activity, $6,586,668 million in grants and loans has been approved to help home owners, renters and businesses recover from the severe storms, tornadoes and floods of May 20 - 24 in the19 Michigan counties declared disaster areas by President Bush June 30.

Here is an update of action by state and federal emergency management teams as recovery efforts continue.

Individuals may apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration line at 1-800-621-3362 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585). While most assistance offered under government programs covers basic needs only and will not compensate individuals for their entire loss, disaster recovery programs can give a helping hand on the road to recovery.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
