Two State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers To Close Saturday July 3

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Effective close of business Saturday, July 3, the Clark County and Washington County Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) will be permanently closed, state and federal recovery officials announced today.

The Clark County center, located at the Jeffersonville Federal Center Building #87, 1201 E 10th Street in Jeffersonville, opened June 14, and has assisted 66 residents. The Washington County center, located in the Salem Court House County Council Room, 99 Public Square in Salem, opened June 21, and has assisted 26 residents.

Disaster Recovery Centers are opened temporarily after a Presidential disaster declaration to assist residents in their recovery. Four other Disaster Recovery Centers will continue to operate Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., until further notice at the following locations:

"Even after centers close, FEMA is just a telephone call away," said Justo "Tito" Hernandez, federal coordinating officer. Disaster victims may still register for assistance or obtain information regarding the status of their applications by calling toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Hearing or speech impaired individuals can call TTY 1-800-462-7585.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
