INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- State and federal disaster recovery officials announced that a Disaster Recovery Center will open on Monday, June 21st in Washington County to serve victims of the tornadoes and flooding that began May 27, 2004. The center location is:

The Washington County Disaster Recovery Center will open Monday, June 21st . Hours of operation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. local time, Monday through Saturday. Personnel at the center can provide disaster housing information, technical assistance on how to reduce future disaster damages, and referrals to other federal and state assistance programs. U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) staff will also be available at the center to assist victims with low-interest loan applications.

People who have suffered damage to their home, apartment or business property in the designated counties are urged to call and apply for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The number for those with hearing or speech impairment is TTY 1-800-462-7585.

After calling the toll-free application number, disaster victims may visit the center to meet face-to-face with recovery specialists. Representatives of local, state and federal agencies, as well as voluntary agencies, will be on hand to provide program and service information.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
