Tippecanoe County Opens Disaster Recovery Center

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- State and federal disaster recovery officials announced that a Disaster Recovery Center will open on Thursday, June 17th in Tippecanoe County to serve victims of the tornadoes and flooding that began May 27, 2004. The center location is:

The Tippecanoe County Disaster Recovery Center will open Thursday, June 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. local time. Beginning Friday, June 18th, the center will be open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. local time until further notice. Personnel at the center can provide disaster housing information, technical assistance on how to reduce future disaster damages, and referrals to other federal and state assistance programs. U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) staff will also be available at the center to assist victims with low-interest loan applications.

People who have suffered damage to their home, apartment or business property in the designated counties are urged to call and apply for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The number for those with hearing or speech impairment is TTY 1-800-462-7585.

After calling the toll-free application number, disaster victims may visit the center to meet face-to-face with recovery specialists. Representatives of local, state and federal agencies, as well as voluntary agencies, will be on hand to provide program and service information.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
