INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Because of the nature of the June 3, 2004 disaster declaration here in Indiana, The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will continue to operate during the national day of mourning on Friday.

"While we recognize the national day of mourning," said Justo "Tito" Hernandez, FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer, "FEMA has a job to do. That job is to provide assistance, without interruption, to the victims of this disaster."

FEMA will continue to operate its Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) to assist victims of the Memorial Day weekend storms and tornados. All DRC's will be open 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., seven days a week, until further notice. The registration line will continue to operate from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. seven days a week.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
