INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- To help meet the ongoing needs of Indiana's tornado and storm victims, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Indiana State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) are opening two Disaster Recovery Centers on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 in Miami and Marion counties. The centers provide a single location where people are able to talk face-to-face with recovery specialists.

The first step in receiving state and federal assistance made available under the June 3, 2004 Presidential disaster declaration is to register by calling the toll-free FEMA application number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). There is also a special number, TTY 1-800-462-7585, for those with speech or hearing impairment. Both lines are open 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. seven days a week until further notice and multilingual operators are available to take your call.

Representatives from local, state and federal agencies, and some private-sector organizations, will staff the joint FEMA and the Indiana Emergency Management Agency Disaster Recovery Centers. The centers are scheduled to open Tuesday, June 8, 2004 and will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. seven days a week, until further notice, at the following locations:

  • Peru Junior High School
    30 East Daniel Street
    Peru, IN

  • Perry Township Community Center
    4925 South Shelby
    Indianapolis, IN

"At this time in the recovery process, people are beginning to think about putting their lives back together," Justo "Tito" Hernandez, FEMA's Federal Coordinating Officer, said. "Right now people want information about the status of their applications for assistance or help filling out their disaster loan application. They want to know their options for rebuilding."

Individuals who are unable to visit the centers and have questions about disaster assistance, rebuilding or preventive measures to avoid future damages are urged to call the FEMA numbers and select the option for "General Information."

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
