West Salem, WI -- Residents who suffered storm or flood damage can find out about their applications for disaster assistance at a Disaster Recovery Center in Neenah from Wednesday, June 27, through Friday, June 29.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) are opening the center at Neenah Police Department Community Room, 2111 Marathon Avenue, Neenah. The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"Representatives of government agencies and volunteer organizations will be at the Disaster Recovery Center," WEM Deputy Administrator Al Shanks said. Information will be available on disaster assistance programs, health issues, insurance claims, loan applications and other recovery issues.

Homeowners, renters and businesses in 15 Wisconsin counties are eligible for disaster assistance under President Bush's May 11 disaster declaration for severe storms and flooding in April. The declaration has been expanded to include the June 11 storms and the June 18 tornado.

Tom Davies of FEMA urged those who have suffered losses or damages to register for disaster assistance. "The first step is to call FEMA's toll--free registration line at 1--800--462--9029."

"If you have already registered because of earlier damage and have additional damage or questions, you don't have to visit the Disaster Recovery Center," Davies said. "You can call FEMA's toll--free Helpline at 1--800--525--0321." Those with hearing or speech impairments may call TTY 1--800--462--7585 to register or reach the Helpline.

Programs available to eligible applicants include:

Disaster Housing Assistance, administered by FEMA, for individuals and families whose homes were destroyed or made unlivable as a result of storms. The program provides funding for temporary accommodations or repairs needed to make a home safe, secure and habitable.

Low--interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration for homeowners, renters and business owners for the repair, replacement or rebuilding of disaster--damaged property.

Grants through the Individual and Family Grant program for people who have serious immediate needs resulting from the disaster that cannot be met by other sources.

Technical advice on common--sense strategies to minimize losses in future disasters.
