ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Flood recovery aid continues in southeastern Minnesota nine weeks after a presidential disaster declaration Aug. 23; however, a survey of victims found widespread misinformation about flood insurance according to officials of Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Many victims stated they were told that flood insurance was unavailable because the property was in or out of the floodplain, or that the community was not eligible.
As a result, flood insurance workshops were held Oct l6-17 in Rochester and Winona, MN for insurance agents on the basics of flood insurance, laws and terminology. David Schein, FEMA Region V Senior Program Floodplain Manager and Ceil Strauss, National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) State Coordinator presented the program.
Forty-seven insurance agents in Rochester and 36 in Winona asked questions about coverage, program history, community participation in the National Flood Insurance Program and floodplain management.
Fred Metzler, FEMA National Flood Program Specialist said, "The workshops were successful in addressing the immediate need for basic education on flood insurance in southeastern Minnesota. Residents in the declared counties will hopefully be better served in their flood insurance needs," he concluded.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
