LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mitigation assistance information will be distributed during September at home improvement stores near areas affected by the August 18-31 storms and flooding. Information on mitigation activities that could reduce future damage in the home, on disaster assistance and flood insurance will be available.

Offered in cooperation with retailers, the FEMA mitigation experts will provide information on steps individuals can take to protect homes from future storm and flood damage.

FEMA representatives will be at the stores from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations and days:

Throughout the day, FEMA disaster experts will provide beneficial mitigation tips and design suggestions to homeowners, building contractors, architects, and others who are interested. Homeowners can learn some simple inexpensive building techniques or strategies that could save big dollars in the event of a disaster.

A study by The National Institute of Building Science's Multi-hazard Mitigation Council found that, although risk from natural disasters cannot be eliminated completely, every $1 spent on mitigation can save as much as $4 in response and recovery.

In addition to disaster mitigation projects, they can answer questions like:

How do I know if I am in a flood zone?
Technically, everyone is in a zone with some level of flood risk. Talking to your local officials or by going online to www.floodsmart.gov can give you valuable information. Find out more from a mitigation specialist at the home improvement center events or at a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC).

Isn't repairing damage cheaper in the long run than paying annual premiums?
You will be surprised by what it will cost these days to repair a foundation and replace damaged furnaces and electrical services compared to an insurance premium.

Can I still purchase flood insurance if my home has been flooded?
Yes. If your community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, you are eligible to purchase flood insurance for your home, apartment, business or condominium. Ask for details at the home improvement center events or at a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC).

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
