INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- If your septic system or well was damaged during the storms and floods in September, you may be eligible for financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for repair or replacement.
For homeowners in counties designated federal disaster areas, FEMA can provide grants to cover wells and septic system damage along with other home repairs. Counties include: Clark, Crawford, Dearborn, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Knox, Lake, Lawrence, LaPorte, Martin, Pike, Porter, Spencer and Switzerland. Other counties may be added.
Eligible homeowners may receive funds to pump a septic tank, perform required repairs or replace the system if necessary. Damaged private wells that are the sole source of water for the house also may be repaired or decontaminated with grant funds.
To apply, first register for disaster assistance with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Those with hearing or speech impairments may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Registration lines and on-line registration at www.fema.gov are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.
All residents are encouraged to get involved with the recovery by helping spread the word about available assistance. Tell your neighbor.
