SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Greene County has been added to the list of counties designated for Public Assistance (Infrastructure) funding following the floods beginning June 1 and ending July 22, according to officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA).

Today's announcement makes federal funding available to the county and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms and flooding.

Under this cost-share program, FEMA usually funds 75 percent of the cost for eligible work by state and local governments and certain private non-profit organizations. On June 30, President Bush authorized federal funds for emergency protective measures (Category B), including direct federal assistance, at 90 percent federal funding of total eligible cost.

Other counties in Illinois previously designated for infrastructure funding include Adams, Calhoun, Clark, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Hancock, Henderson, Jasper, Jersey, Lake, Lawrence, Madison, Mercer, Monroe, Pike, Randolph, Rock Island, St. Clair and Winnebago.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
