INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Eight days after President Bush issued a major disaster declaration for Indiana, close to $9 million in disaster assistance grants and loans have been issued. Federal and state recovery officials announced that today a total of 6,534 residents have applied for disaster assistance in the 28 designated Indiana counties.
The following is an update of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) recovery activities as of close of business Monday, June 16.
- 6,534 individuals (homeowners, renters and business owners) have applied for assistance in the 28 counties designated for Individual Assistance (IA). Counties designated eligible for IA and their corresponding registrations are: Adams-3, Bartholomew-1,423, Brown-97, Clay-79, Daviess-21, Decatur-9, Dearborn-1, Greene-82, Hamilton-5, Hancock-23, Henry-7, Jackson-73, Jennings-4, Johnson-778, Knox-34, Marion-646, Monroe-140, Morgan-1,388, Owen-178, Parke-16, Putnam-14, Randolph-11, Rush-6, Shelby-79, Sullivan-18, Vermillion-81, Vigo-1,297 and Wayne-3. Eighteen registrants came from undesignated counties.
- $8,940,173 in grants have been issued through the Individuals and Household Program. This assistance may be used for temporary disaster housing assistance; repair of disaster-damaged, uninsured homes back to safe, sanitary and functional conditions; and for replacement grants for serious, disaster-related needs and expenses not covered by insurance or other assistance programs.
- 4,800 applications have been issued by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). SBA officials encourage anyone who has received an application from the SBA to turn it in as soon as possible in order to be eligible for any further assistance.
- 915 people have visited one of the five Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) that are or have been temporarily opened in various locations to help meet the needs of disaster victims. The number of visits by location is Bartholomew-227, Johnson-142, Marion-44, Morgan-256 and Vigo-246.
Federal and state officials urge homeowners, renters and businesses affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that occurred May 30, 2008 and continuing to apply immediately by calling 1-800-621-FEMA or for those with hearing or visual impairments call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Registration lines and on-line registration are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.
All residents are encouraged to get involved with the recovery by helping spread the word about available assistance. Tell your neighbor.
