CHICAGO, Ill. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today awarded $2,410,000 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to the Flint River Dike and Erosion Control Board in Saginaw County, Mich., for the reconstruction of eroding dikes and construction of erosion control reservoirs along the Flint River.

“This kind of project is the cornerstone of disaster prevention efforts,” said Edward G. Buikema, regional director, FEMA Region V. “These projects will protect the health, safety, and welfare of Saginaw County residents and illustrate the importance of local, state and federal governments working together for the benefit of their citizens.”

The project involves the reconstruction of existing earthen dikes, and construction of a storage reservoir and two wetland areas. The project will reduce the economic loss and hardship to the community from the costs associated with repeated flood damages.

Through HMGP, FEMA will pay 75 percent of the project costs and the Flint River Dike and Erosion Control Board will contribute the remaining 25 percent. The Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division administers the mitigation program.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
