Oxygen-Release Compound

Adding oxygen to the subsurface can accelerate aerobic biodegradation and enhance the rates of natural attenuation of contaminants. There are many ways to add oxygen to the subsurface, and they all have advantages and disadvantages given the particular hydraulic, geologic, and microbiologic characteristics of the site. In this particular case (Laurel Bay, SC, and Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL), a patented blend of time-release magnesium peroxide marketed by Regenesis was used. Other methods of adding oxygen to the subsurface include injecting air or oxygen gas, or injecting solutions of hydrogen peroxide, Fenton's Reagent, potassium permanganate, and other chemicals.
