Research Project:
Introgressing White Mold Resistance from the Secondary Gene Pool of Common Bean
Location: Sunflower Research
Project Number: 5442-21220-023-46
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jun 01, 2007
End Date: May 31, 2009
Objective:
1) Develop five interspecific breeding lines derived from three Phaseolus species that breed pure for white mold resistance;
2) Compare the physiological resistance of the five interspecific breeding lines with known sources of white mold resistance;
3) Initiate white mold resistance screening of a new group of 482 interspecific breeding lines derived from crosses of pinto bean Othello and UI 320 with Phaseolus coccineus PI 433246 and PI 439534, respectively.
Approach:
Twenty-four single-plant selections from each of the five interspecific breeding lines, as well as susceptible and resistant checks will be screened in the greenhouse using a modified straw-test. The plant with the highest resistance from each interspecific breeding line will be selected. The resistance of the single-plant selection from each of the five interspecific breeding lines will be compared with ICA Pijao, Phaseolus coccineus G 35172, known sources of white mold resistant dry bean, and susceptible pinto bean Othello in the greenhouse. Sequential screening of 482 interspecific breeding lines derived from crosses of pinto bean Othello and UI 320 with Phaseolus coccineus PI 433246 and PI 439534 along with the four parents will be initiated in the greenhouse. Only the highly resistant plants will be selected for subsequent screenings.
