Research Project:
Identification of Markers Linked to Stem Rust Resistance in Wheat
Location: Cereal Disease Laboratory
Project Number: 3640-21220-020-06
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 31, 2006
End Date: Jun 30, 2011
Objective:
The objective of the cooperative project is to rapidly and efficiently, identify usable molecular markers for novel resistance to race TTKS (or Ug99) of the stem rust pathogen that poses a threat to wheat production worldwide.
Approach:
Using molecular markers to genotype segregating populations for stem rust resistance to identify markers that are linked to important stem rust resistance genes.
Objective 1: Cooperator's expertise in molecular mapping of disease resistance and laboratory facility will allow the accomplishment of research ojectives to identify molecular markers linked to stem rust resistance genes, specifically genes that are effective against Ug99. DArT and SSR mapping approaches will be used. Objective 2: Graduate student to research resistance identification in wheat and wild relatives, mapping of resistance genes, and race-typing stem rust samples.
