Research Project: Profiling Viruses Associated with Grapevine Leafroll Disease in the Vineyards of the Pacific Northwest

Location: Horticultural Crops Research

Project Number: 5358-22000-033-01
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 12, 2006
End Date: Sep 30, 2009

Objective:
Characterize and document the occurrence and distribution of different grapevine leafroll-associated viruses in the Pacific Northwest region. Evaluate the ability of the grape mealybug to transmit different grapevine leafroll-associated viruses.

Approach:
Leaf samples showing symptoms of grapevine leafroll virus (GLD) will be collected during the growing season from red-fruited varieties in Washington and Oregon states. The samples will be tested to determine which GLRaVs are present, using ELISA and RT-PCR. The data will be used to map the distribution of different GLRaVs, to determine whether any associations exist between specific grapevine varieties and GLRaVs, and to estimate the frequency with which different GLRaVs occur as mixed infections. Vector transmission studies will be conducted to determine if grape mealybug, the putative vector of GLRaV-3, can transmit GLRaV-5 and -8 that have recently been found in Washington vineyards.
