The Library of Congress generally does not own rights to material in its collections and, therefore, cannot grant or deny permission to publish or otherwise distribute the material. Users can download images themselves or can order copies through the Library of Congress Photoduplication Service. FSA/OWI/OEM negatives were generally digitized from intermediary roll film. Exceptions are those with reproduction numbers beginning LC-DIG..., which generally indicate a high resolution digital file made from an original negative. See "Digitizing the Collection" for further information.

Obtaining Black & White Photographic Copies

Order Number: Use the the LC-US... number listed in the Reproduction Number field above. If the number begins with LC-USF33 or the Medium field says "nitrate," see the Interruption in Service notice below.

Expect Delays in Service of Nitrate Negatives

Negatives on nitrate film base have moved from one off-site facility to a new, state-of-the art facility. Reproduction from these negatives will be slower than normal as we re-establish reproduction services in the new location. Expect at least an eight to ten week turnaround on printing of nitrate negatives.

• When: Expect delays (at least an eight to ten week turnaround) in filling of reproduction orders from nitrate negatives. (We will adjust our notices when delays are no longer in effect.)

• What: Clues that an FSA/OWI/OEM image may be affected by the nitrate negative move are:

  • The MEDIUM field says "1 negative : nitrate" OR
  • The information in the REPRODUCTION NUMBER field begins with: LC-USF33-

If either is the case, you may wish to consult with Prints and Photographs Division reference staff (202-707-6394). In certain instances, duplicate negatives are available for copying.

Obtaining Color Photographic Copies

Photographic prints in the FSA/OWI Collection were made in black-and-white, but the original prints exhibit varying tonality. If the tonality of the original print is desired, the item must be photographed in color.
Order Number: Use the LC-USZC... number listed in the Reproduction Number field above. If no LC-USZC... number is listed, research will be needed to locate a photographic print. Items that are "Untitled" do not have corresponding photographic prints.

Obtaining Copies from Digital Files through the Photoduplication Service

The Photoduplication Service can only make copies from existing digital files (that is, a picture is displaying with the catalog record). The Photoduplication Service does not scan original items from P&P collections.
Order Number: Use the number listed in the Reproduction Number field above. Include a copy of the catalog record with the order to help staff locate the particular item in question. Reproduction numbers that begin LC-DIG... generally indicate a high resolution scan from the original negative.
