Physical Chemistry of Stable Isotope Fractionation in Hydrologic Processes

Several light stable isotopes (H, C, N, O, Si, and S) show variations in their isotope abundances and can be used for the study of evaporation, ground-water mixing, biotransformations, lake or reservoir circulation and stratification and associated hydrochemical phenomena. These isotope fractionations are related to: (1) purely physical processes; (2) heterogeneous chemical equilibria; and (3) reaction kinetics. Many of these processes are not sufficiently understood or quantified to make the most effective use of stable isotope techniques in hydrologic research. Objectives of this project are to develop theoretical and instrumental mass spectrometric techniques through experimental investigation and to test techniques in suitable field locations, to aid in more complete utilization of light stable- isotope phenomena in hydrologic studies. For additional information, including research highlights, see the home page for the Reston Stable Isotope Laboratory.
