Scientists Inaugurate GlobalSoilMap.net
SSSA President Paul Bertsch was joined by Pedro Sanchez, Jeffrey Sachs, and others at Columbia University on Feb 17 to formally inaugurate GlobalSoilMap.net. The project will digitally map the Earth's soils, with work already begun in sub-Saharan Africa. Bertsch provided remarks about the global impact of GlobalSoilMap.net. Gore Highlights Seeds, Agronomy in AAAS Keynote
As the keynote speaker on Feb. 13 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting in Chicago, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore called on scientists to use their expertise to push for changes in energy and environmental policies. He also spoke of seeds and agronomy in his speech, saying, "When our nation was founded . . . there was easy accessibility . . . to the latest knowledge about seeds and agronomy and the sciences of the day." He then spoke of the current divide between politics and science, and urged scientists to get involved in policy. View AAAS article and video >>

ASA, CSSA, and SSSA invite nominations for their 2009 Awards and Scholarships. There are dozens of awards to honor individuals who excel in the lab, field, classroom, and community; and student scholarships reward up-and-coming talent.
