FDA Approves New Combination Vaccine for Childhood Immunization (exit)
On December 16, 2002 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the approval of a new combination vaccine that protects infants against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, and disease due to the Hepatitis B virus. The vaccine will be marketed under the name Pediarix™, and can be given to infants at two, four and six months of age. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Pediarix™ offers protection against these five diseases in a three-dose vaccination series. This combination vaccine results in up to six fewer injections for infants.
