Grazing Assessment Available for Review and Comment

The Bureau of Land Management’s Lewistown Field Office (BLM) has completed an environmental assessment (EA) analyzing alternatives for issuing livestock grazing permits for five BLM grazing allotments in Fergus and Petroleum Counties to the Weaver Cattle Company in Big Sandy, Montana.

The EA will be available for a 30-day public comment period beginning on April 5, 2008.

In May 2007, Western Skies Land Company LLC purchased the Weaver Ranch north of Winnett, Montana, and then applied to have the six BLM grazing allotments attached to this base property transferred to Western Skies. Based upon the documentation and grazing preference transfer applications, it was determined that Western Skies was qualified to hold the BLM grazing preference.

Western Skies Land Company LLC and the Weaver Cattle Company in Big Sandy have since applied to have five of the grazing allotments transferred to the Weaver Cattle Company in Big Sandy.
This EA considered five alternatives for issuing grazing permits for these grazing allotments, and analyzed three of them in detail.

You can obtain a copy of the EA at the BLM’s Lewistown Field Office (920 NE Main) in Lewistown, or by calling the BLM office at 538-1900 and requesting a copy be sent to you.
