News From the Field 'Ultrasound' of Earth's Crust Reveals Inner Workings of a Tsunami Factory

Research announced this week by U.S. and Japanese geoscientists may explain why part of the seafloor near the southwest coast of Japan generates devastating tsunamis, such as the 1944 Tonankai event, which killed at least 1,200 people. The findings will help assess the risk of giant tsunamis in other regions of the world.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2009, its budget is $9.5 billion, which includes $3.0 billion provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to over 1,900 universities and institutions.
