The latest development in a major debate over a controversial hypothesis of biodiversity and species abundance will be published in the Nov. 1, 2007, issue of the journal Nature. The authors report good agreement between the species richness of two of the most vulnerable ecosystems--tropical forests and coral reefs--and a simple mathematical model building on the "neutral theory of biodiversity."

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2009, its budget is $9.5 billion, which includes $3.0 billion provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
