Visiting Scholars Programs

Applications are invited for the 2009-2010 program (see details below)

The Institute for Research on Poverty invites applications from U.S.-based social science scholars from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups to visit IRP, interact with its faculty in residence, and become acquainted with the staff and resources of the Institute. The invitation extends (but is not restricted) to those who are in the early years of their academic careers. The intent of the program, which is supported by the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is to enhance the research interests and resources available to visitors, to foster interaction between resident IRP affiliates and a diverse set of scholars, and to broaden the corps of poverty researchers.

Visits of one to two weeks’ duration by three scholars can be supported during either fall or spring semester of the academic year 2009–2010. The scholars will be invited to give a seminar, to work on their own projects, and to confer with an IRP faculty mentor, who will arrange for interchange with other IRP affiliates. Transportation, lodging, and meal expenses will be covered by IRP.

Interested scholars should submit the following materials: (1) a letter describing their poverty research interests and experience; (2) the proposed dates for a visit; (3) a current curriculum vitae; (4) two examples of written material; and (5) an estimate of costs to be covered by IRP, to: Robin Snell, Institute for Research on Poverty, 1180 Observatory Drive, Madison WI 53706; fax: 608-265-3119; e-mail: rsnell@ssc.wisc.edu. Applications should be submitted by the end of June (i.e., two months before the academic year begins). IRP’s Executive Committee reviews applications and selects scholars.

The application deadline for the 2009-2010 program is June 30, 2009.

In addition to sponsoring the visits of underrepresented scholars, IRP hosts a broad range of faculty, researchers, and policy analysts for limited or longer-term stays. IRP offers these visitors office space, access to computers, and the opportunity to interact with IRP affiliates and other scholars on campus and to participate in campus events. Access to the data resources housed at IRP may also be arranged. These visitors are responsible for all of their own expenses beyond office space and computer access. IRP particularly encourages visits by researchers located in the Midwest or those with special interest in topics having a Midwest focus.

Potential visitors under the second program are asked to submit the following: (1) a letter describing their poverty research interests and experience; (2) the proposed dates for a visit; (3) a current curriculum vitae; and (4) two examples of written material, to: Robin Snell, Institute for Research on Poverty, 1180 Observatory Drive, Madison WI 53706; fax: 608-265-3119; e-mail:rsnell@ssc.wisc.edu.

Applications for this second, longer-term IRP visitors program are accepted year round.
